"THE BIG WRITE"
Borras Park Junior School
Dear Parents/carers,
From Year 3 to Year 6 we have introduced a programme to ensure that pupils learn all of the essential skills for successful writing based on a national initiative known as ‘The Big Write’.
During daily English lesson areas of teaching and learning will focus on basic skills such as grammar, punctuation and handwriting. Pupils will also be encouraged to develop a formal writing style, which will be called their writer’s voice. It is essential that we also develop pupils’ speaking and listening skills alongside their writing, in order to support both oral and writing achievement. To support the process each week classes have a ‘Big Write’, when they can demonstrate their learning and achievement in writing.
To further enable this they will also have a ‘Talking Homework’ introduction earlier in the week, delivered by their English/class teacher when they will discuss the focus of the writing task.
Your son/daughter(s) will then bring home a short letter which will have some prompts and/or questions (Talking Homework) to aid discussion at home before the ‘Big Write’. I recommend that parents/carers spend about ten minutes discussing the topic or theme of the writing their son/daughter(s) will be completing in school. The Talk for Writing information sent home, probably fortnightly, will explain the work that pupils will be doing in class that week. If parents/carers have more than one child in the school then all the children can take part in discussing the Talk for Writing work. This can be done in an informal and relaxed way, maybe in the car, as you walk home or during teatime.
Please note that Talking Homework is a discussion/oral task and does not require any written work at home- all written work will take place in school.
Developing reading and writing skills are critical to help your son/daughter(s) to be successful throughout life. I am sure that everyone involved in the life of the school will enjoy ‘The Big Write’ and parents/carers will enjoy finding out what their son/daughters(s) are writing about in school.
Please feel free to contact your son/daughter(s)’ class teacher if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support of our school and for taking the time to participate in Talking Homework at home with your son/daughter(s).
Mrs. Karen Small.
